Let’s talk meditation!

You heard me! M E D I T A T I O N

I see you rolling your eyes and scrolling right through. Just a few months ago I was doing the same. But here’s the catch…It actually IS an incredible tool to learn how to connect to yourself. Meditation has helped me so much these past few months. I started therapy and quickly realized that my inner past versions of me needed healing. So I reluctantly turned to meditation aaaaaand it honestly has changed me forever.

When we think of meditation we think of sitting on the floor with candles, crystals and incense concentrating and being completely quiet and still. As good as that is and can work perfectly for someone else it sounds horrible to me. I can never sit still, I always have to fidget and honestly it is so hard to focus when I am in silence. So I started to experiment a few different meditation techniques.

My favourite by far is a workout meditation. Now I see you looking confused. Isn’t meditation supposed to be the opposite of a workout?! Well technically yes but the ultimate goal in meditation is to get to that place where you can focus on you and exchange with your inner self.

Start by calming your heart and mind, feel your whole entire body. Give your all during your set of whatever exercise you are doing. Once the set is finished calm your breath once again. Focus on you and your inner self. Listen to yourself. Deep breaths. Spend time with yourself in this safe space and give yourself whatever you need. Repeat in between each set.

This technique helps so much for those of us who have trouble being still. While performing your set you are raising energy, this is the energy that fights the stillness when you are meditating. By getting rid of it before the meditative part you allow your mind to be more present during meditation. You also give yourself the focus and mindfulness to connect with your inner self.

I also have started to turn my commutes into small meditations.

When I try to meditate at home I often feel guilty for not doing housework of taking this time to rest or workout. But by practicing meditation during my commutes I am “trapped” the only other activity is doom scroll on my phone. So a few times a week I take my commute time to sit quietly and meditate. I like to wear my headphones and put on a corresponding meditation frequency or listen to a guided meditation. I stick to a short time period so that I don’t feel like it’s taunting. Also the fact that I usually do this after work and I have spent all my energy at work helps me focus.

I’ve also tried guided meditations while cooking and cleaning and they have been some of the best meditations I’ve had! Of course to do so you kind of have to be in autopilot so maybe not when operating heavy machinery you’ve never used before or cooking a 5 course meal. But definitely when you are making that lovely dish you’ve been making for years and don’t need to think while doing it!

Anyhow all this to say… meditation does not have to be sitting quietly in the floor. If that sounds taunting to you make it your own! Remember the goal of meditation. To slow ourselves down, to reconnect with ourselves and the world around us, to feel and heal.

Happy meditation journey!
